Google threw the tech world a curveball by showing off Android Wear, a specialized version of its Android mobile operating system tailor-made for wearables such as smartwatches. Featuring a beautifully simple UI, Google Now, touchless control, phone integration, notifications, and everything else you want a smartwatch to do - and more.
The interface works with square screens or circular screens for a more traditional smartwatch look. The homescreen puts Google Now front and center, showing information that you need when you need it.
The developer preview for the Wear SDK is out now - so developers can start developing applications and integrating Wear support into their current Android projects.
It’s been a shaky few years for the wearable market, with smartwatches such as the Pebble and Galaxy Gear releasing to lukewarm reception. Maybe this is what we need to give this brand-new market a push in the right direction.
